14 Mama Gardens: Planting Hope, Serving Nutrition, Revitalizing Communities.

The development of 10 Mama Gardens across 7 districts in East Nusa Tenggara focuses on increasing access to nutritious foods, producing local vegetables and fruits, and establishing community kitchens based on organic farming practices. Through a community asset–based approach, the program strengthens the capacity of women, schools, and health posts to achieve food self-reliance, reduce dependence on external food supplies, and support stunting reduction efforts.

Competency requirements

Family Nutrition & Health

Family Nutrition & Health

Nutrition interventions aim to improve household consumption of nutritious foods through healthy gardens, community kitchens, and nutrition education for mothers and caregivers. This approach reinforces healthy eating behaviors, integrates nutrient-rich local foods, and ensures year-round availability of fruits and vegetables to support stunting reduction among children in target villages.

Education & Green Schools

Education & Green Schools

Educational integration positions the garden as a learning hub for food, ecology, and sustainability with support from schools and health posts. Children learn directly from the garden through project-based methods, while teachers and community health cadres receive green school guidelines. This intervention strengthens literacy in nutrition, agriculture, and the environment, forming a younger generation aware of healthy food and village ecosystems.

Environment & Village Ecology

Environment & Village Ecology

Environmental restoration is implemented through regenerative agriculture, household waste processing into compost, and the recovery of soil and water quality. Mama’s Garden provides ecological solutions that increase land productivity in semi-arid areas, enrich biodiversity, and strengthen community resilience to climate change through organic farming and permaculture design.

Local Economy & Women-Led MSMEs

Local Economy & Women-Led MSMEs

Community economic interventions strengthen the roles of women and youth in managing gardens, processing local food products, and building inclusive value chains with village-owned enterprises and local markets. With improved skills, market access, and added value from harvests, families gain new income sources that reinforce village economic independence based on local food systems.
